The central promise conservatives make is “small government.” It sounds appealing—who wouldn’t want less bureaucracy and fewer unnecessary laws? But the reality of how this philosophy is carried out tells a very different story.
If “small government” truly meant fewer restrictions on people—like ending the War on Drugs or stopping the mass incarceration of individuals for simple possession—many Americans would welcome it. But that’s not where the cuts happen. Instead, deregulation overwhelmingly targets the protections that shield ordinary Americans from corporate abuse, environmental harm, unsafe food, and financial instability.
Take the EPA. Conservatives often frame it as bloated bureaucracy, but dismantling or weakening the EPA doesn’t free people—it frees corporations. Without strong environmental rules, companies gain the freedom to dump toxic waste wherever they choose, with little oversight and few consequences. That isn’t “freedom” for the public. It’s exposure.
The same pattern applies to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. This agency ensures our food is safe to eat, yet Republican administrations repeatedly eliminate jobs and slash funding. When inspectors are spread too thin to do their jobs, it’s not inefficiency—it’s sabotage. These cuts are then used as proof that the agency “doesn’t work,” justifying further dismantling. The public ends up with weakened food safety because an essential service was deliberately under-resourced.
Even the FDIC—the institution that protects our bank deposits up to $250,000—is not immune. Undermining the FDIC or weakening financial regulation puts every depositor at risk. Without strong safeguards, it becomes easier for banks to engage in reckless behavior that can trigger system-wide failures. We’ve seen what deregulation can lead to, and everyday Americans always pay the price.
And this is only part of the picture. Medicare is being chipped away as Medicare Advantage takes over—despite being a private, profit-driven product that is not real Medicare. Social Security is repeatedly targeted under the banner of “reform,” even though it is one of the most successful and relied-upon programs in American history. Agencies like the FDA, which ensure the safety of our medicines and consumer products, also face constant budget cuts and political attacks.
This isn’t about making government smaller for the benefit of the people. It’s about making government weaker so corporations can operate without meaningful oversight—while leaving ordinary Americans with fewer protections, fewer guarantees, and fewer safeguards.
When we remove the rhetoric and look at the results, the pattern is unmistakable:
Deregulation doesn’t liberate people. It liberates powerful interests at the expense of everyone else. This ultimately gives freedom to corporations to pollute, poison and scam US.

Conservatives claim they want “small government,” but their deregulation rarely frees people—only corporations, by stripping away protections that keep our air, food, health, and finances safe. In reality, weakening agencies like the EPA, USDA, FDA, Medicare, and the FDIC leaves ordinary Americans more vulnerable while giving powerful interests a free pass.
